I couldn't put it down because I realized, wow, this is really, this is the missing piece. And this is the thing that was really starting to impact me and I was seeing it in the women around me as well that when people don't take care of themselves, everything's impacted, including the success in business. Hi, welcome to the Connect with Sheila Botelho podcast. I'm an entrepreneur, self-care strategist and creator of the Season Self-Care app. I'm committed to helping you reconnect to your purpose, elevate your well-being and build your version of a happy, successful life. You're listening to a Monday Minisode where I share an insight designed to help you live into what lights you up this week.
Sheila:Imagine if rest was a success strategy. Wild, I know. Have you ever heard of rest spoken of in such a way? Listen, strategic rest is an edge for high-level entrepreneurs, who often neglect this.
Sheila:So there are so many things that have shifted in my life over the years when I started to realize that go, go, go was actually not helping me get it done. In fact, it was actually getting in the way of more success in my life because it would lead to me getting sick, it would lead to me not having clear thinking because I was tired, and it would lead to me over clear thinking because I was tired, and it would lead to me over scheduling my calendar, and what that did was it didn't allow open space for me to have magical connections with people that I otherwise never would have met, or have extended space to have longer conversations with people who already were on my calendar. Sometimes the magic happens not during the scheduled meeting. Have you ever found that? So I have really found personally that rest is an essential for sustaining long-term performance and success, and it was really interesting because after my sister got sick and if you know my story, I lost my sister to cancer in 2013. You can go check out the story at a previous episode, I believe May, of last year. I actually had an extended episode of that time and I will link it actually in the show notes just so you can hear it.
Sheila:It was obviously a very heartbreaking time and it took me about a year and a half to be able to get through kind of get through the fog to the other side of that experience and it helped me to start looking at my life in a different way and also the work I was doing in the wellness space, realizing it was so much more than just oh, what are the good things we're putting in our body and are we exercising? It was also very much about a mindset and an embodiment practice surrounding caring for yourself in so many other ways. It dealt with boundaries, it dealt with how much you rest. It dealt with just so many things the way you treat yourself internally and the way you allow other people to treat you. And, as I was in this experience, I was home educating my boys still, and I remember there was a chess club that they were a part of at the local library and we have a beautiful library system in the area where I live and at this particular place I would go and I would take some magazines or books to read, or actually I would just get them there while I was sitting by this beautiful little fireplace setup, comfy leather chairs, like I'm talking. It's a beautiful location and one of the things that caught my eye was a book called Thrive by Arianna Huffington, and I read her story and if you know Arianna and you know her story, she famously shifted her approach to work after experiencing burnout.
Sheila:She famously shifted her approach to work after experiencing burnout, which led to her focusing on the power of rest as a foundation for success, and this literally happened after she collapsed from exhaustion in 2007. I couldn't put it down because I realized, wow, this is the missing piece, and this is the thing that was really starting to impact me and I was seeing it in the women around me as well and so she realized the critical role of rest and wellbeing that play a huge part in sustaining high-level performance. I mean, she's a very successful woman, and there are many other people who she's since spoken to who also have had not the exact same experience, but who have seen that when people don't take care of themselves, everything's impacted, including the success in business, right, yeah? And so this changed not only her personal routine but inspired her to create a whole company dedicated to improving wellbeing and performance through rest, mindfulness and self-care, and so that was literally one of the first books that I read that was really addressing this, and that is when I started to make the shift. My sister was only one of many different stories of women in midlife who were starting to get sick, and some people were dying. Some people were just really needing to re-navigate the way they lived their life because it was not working for them anymore. And so, as a result, I became impassioned to share this message in my own work, and that's when I became a self-care strategist.
Sheila:And so this thought for the week that I really invite you to go into it with is rest as a strategy, not a reward. Think about it. How often have you said to yourself when I get these things done, when I'm finished all the organization, when I've got the call booked, when I've had this many sales calls, when I've had this many meetings, when the webinars I'll put together, then I'll rest? But you know what? So many more incredible things can happen when you rest first and then you clearly put your plan of action together. Your energy is magnetic, you're vibrant, you have everything you need to move forward. Energy is magnetic, you're vibrant, you have everything you need to move forward. So two things I want to leave you with is that rest as an investment. Okay, think of rest as an investment, not an indulgence. So many high-level entrepreneurs like Ariana have viewed rest as a luxury or reward after hard work. But what if rest is actually one of the most strategic investments that we can make? So by scheduling regular periods of rest and recovery, you can replenish your energy, maintain your mental clarity and prevent burnout, ultimately sustaining high performance for the long-term.
Sheila:The second thought I want to leave you with is prioritizing rest to fuel creativity and innovation. Think about when you've been working all day on something and then you have a quick break and then you get back at it and you're thinking I'm just going to get back at it and your energy reserves are just not what they were at the start of the day. Think about this. Rest is not just about physical recovery. It's also essential for mental and emotional rejuvenation. So some of the most innovative ideas and I've found this personally come not when we are grinding, but when we're relaxed and we're open to new perspectives. This is why, often, I will write emails, I will plan programs, I will strategize on conversations I'm about to have on my walks. That's why I call them my CEO soul walks. Literally. I get a lot of business done. Sometimes they're my God walks too right, so it depends, but it's where I'm working things out.
Sheila:So by making rest a non-negotiable part of your routine, you can create space for insights and creative breakthroughs that drive your business forward. So think about those two things as you go into this week. This reframing is going to help you to prioritize rest without guilt, ultimately enhancing both your work and your wellbeing. And let's face it, why are you doing the work you're doing? To create some kind of transformation with others, right? You want them to feel good. You get to feel good too, and you also are doing it to create a certain lifestyle for yourself. Let's stop disconnecting our work from the ultimate goal in our life of feeling good. How about we combine them? And so, when you're rested, you get to do that, you get to play, you get to have more fun because you're feeling more energized. That is the thought for the week. Carry it with you.
Sheila:This is a Monday mini-sode. Hopefully you got rested over the weekend, but as we are in this time of the year and sometimes no matter what time of the year it is the weekend is anything but relaxing, because that's when everybody's getting all of the other things done that they didn't get to do during the week. So what if we focus on rest every single day to fuel us for the next day? I think that's kind of why we need to sleep at night, right? It's kind of baked into our human design. So this and many other things are the foundational themes that we follow in the Seasons Growth Accelerator, and it's my 12-week program to sharpen your focus, increase your influence and transform your emerging vision into reality. So in this case, whether you're launching a new part of your business, creating a new course, writing a book, creating a community or growing your online presence as a thought leader, this is where your ideas can flourish and make a real impact. So check it out. Rest is on the agenda.
