I'm an entrepreneur, self-care strategist and creator of the Seasons self-care app. I'm committed to helping you elevate your wellbeing after you reconnect to your purpose so you can build your version of a happy, successful life. And you're listening to a Monday Minnesota, where I share an insight designed to help you live into what lights you up this week.
Sheila:Have you ever felt imposter syndrome? Have you ever heard that term? Really, what it is is, it is self-doubt. I've heard people say imposter syndrome doesn't actually exist because you are who you are. It really is just fear that's dressed up really beautifully. I kind of tend to agree.
Sheila:We all know those times where we're elevating in our lives or where we're walking into new rooms where we feel ill-prepared to be there and we're like, whoa, I'm actually doing this right now and do I deserve to be here? Should I be here? And I guess maybe that is what people are referring to when they think about imposter syndrome. But really, when I look at it, deep beneath anything that we are finding resistance to in our lives, there is fear. It's everything's love or fear. I had a beautiful person on the podcast talking about this, osa Natalie Fraser. She was talking about that it's all love or fear and you know, it's really, really true. And so if you're ever feeling that way like it's imposter syndrome really, maybe it's self-doubt and hey, you're in good company. All of us doubt ourselves all the time, sometimes about little things, not to mention those big, beautiful moves that you're making in your life and business. And so today I wanted to address that because it's something real, it's something that we experience and there's really no getting away from it. It doesn't matter how much success you have in your life.
Sheila:Clients of mine have reached very high pinnacles of success, and yet when they're trying something new, when they're stepping into a pivot in their business, all of those old emotions come up very often about doubting themselves. Should they really be taking this step? Will people really take me seriously? Am I qualified? This is something that happens a lot, that one comes up so much, so much with my clients, and it has come up with me as well. So, hey, I understand it.
Sheila:But when we realize that really is just coming from a place of fear and uncertainty, where our brain is trying to keep us safe, because it takes so much energy for our brain to do new things, Like literally the part of our body that takes the most caloric intake is our brain, imagine, think about all the things that your brain is needing to navigate on a daily basis. Like we're talking not just advertising messages, but decisions, little decisions all piled on top of each other amidst very big decisions, like how do we handle what the kids are doing, what the aging parents are doing, what my career is doing, what the neighbors are doing, what's expected of me, what's being subtly said, that I have to read between the lines to understand what's being directly said. It's exhausting for our brain. So then you pile on something like, ooh, I'm going to learn a brand new thing and I'm going to step into a whole new world of work that I've never done before. Well, no wonder your brain gets on fire and it's like let me just protect you. Let me protect you and I'm going to stop you from doing this. So I'm just going to remind you of all of those times when things didn't work out for you. I'm going to stop you from doing this. So I'm just going to remind you of all of those times when things didn't work out for you, and I'm going to remind you of all of your insecurities and the things in your life like everything from oh, I don't know, my ankles are maybe a little too wide. Is that really? Does it have anything to do with your business? No, but like, all of these things come up, and so I wanted to share two little tips to help you when that happens, because the answer is not shutting it all down and saying nope, I'm going to be satisfied with the status quo, because if you're listening to this episode, if the title brought you in to listen, you're here for a reason, and maybe the reason is that you are stepping into something bigger in your life and you are looking for something to propel you forward into it.
Sheila:And so two things that I have found to be so helpful. I do them myself, I offer it to people I work with, and it is first to get embodied, to get out of your head and get into your body. We often were taught by our beautiful elders and by movies and TV, growing up and school. We need to think logically when it comes to business. So it's all about lists, pros and cons, roi, all those things, everything on paper, but we've missed that embodiment piece because, just like when you're going to do something new, your body and your brain is reminding you oh, my goodness, I don't know, this is new.
Sheila:Your body is holding onto everything that you've ever experienced in your life and that's why you may have an out-of-body experience at times where you're like what? I'm so successful in my life in so many areas. Why is this freaking me out? I don't understand. It's okay. Your body remembers and your body speaks to you in different ways, and your body is slower to respond. So one way for you to be able to handle this if this is really meant for you, this next thing that you want to do in your life is slow down. If you can, get outside, get on that grass, ground yourself, focus on your breath and really tune into your heart. What is your heart telling you? Your head may be telling you all the reasons why this is going to be challenging. This is going to be hard Because, guess what, yeah, new stuff's going to be challenging.
Sheila:My 16-year-old is learning how to drive standard. He's amazing, by the way, only because he overcame the first stages of driving stick shift. It's not always pretty when we're learning something new. He actually did better than most people do from what I've seen, but he stayed with it. He was consistent with it. Now he's doing it beautifully, but it takes effort. Is it always pretty? Is it hard? Yeah, do we sometimes look foolish when we're trying something new? Yeah, but that's okay, because the people who are actually really doing beautiful things in their life and they're trying new things and they're pushing their growth edges, they are the ones who are going to be cheering you on. There are cheerleaders there and I'm here to cheer you on. I hope this episode does so.
Sheila:First, let's get embodied. The second piece. The second piece oh, there's balloons now on my video. The second piece is for you to actually find some support around it so that you're not going it alone, to be able to remind you, to reflect back to you your biggest dreams. So this is where your cheerleaders come in. I'm talking about people who are there to celebrate with you, the people, maybe, who are in the arena right now. Find one person, even if it is just something like this podcast or a really great book or audio book or a networking event or something, but one person who's got your back, who says, look, it's uncomfortable, it's messy and it's worth doing because it's on your heart and it will not leave you alone. If that desire is relentless, then it's meant for you, and sometimes it may look different than what you really truly expect after you take the first step or the second step or the third step, but I'm inviting you to trust yourself, to just take that first step and see where it leads you. It may lead you somewhere you never imagined. This happens all the time for me, all the time. So take those two steps the embodiment piece and finding your hype squad and trust yourself to make the move.
