Overwhelm is at the root of why so many of us struggle to improve our lives, relationships, and health.

There’s So. Much. To. Do.

You can go months, or even years without stopping for more than an evening or an afternoon before the whirlwind that is your life sweeps you up again.

This is more than an analogy. Overwhelm is one of the leading topics therapists and coaches work through with their clients these days. People everywhere feel like they can’t keep up.

It’s no wonder – with technology changing at the speed of 5G and innovation spurring competition in mainstream and online businesses. You can find it a supreme challenge to disconnect your mind from what’s next, even if you’ve managed to miraculously turn your fancy phone off.

Keeping up with your career, the onslaught of new information and global issues can take over your mind and heart space. Making time for meaningful connection with loved ones and simple fun seems like a dream that you can be too exhausted to engage in. 

As I’ve taught for years, your adrenals and your hormones can take a serious hit from overwork and over functioning in your life. So how can you be productive and fulfilled at the same time?

Plan regular, intentional breaks that last a few days, or more.

I’m passionate about this. So much so, that I take regular weekends away from my laptop and apps, as well as longer periods of time unplugged. My work lives online, so this may seem counter-intuitive, but it’s the only way I can show up and serve my clients and my family at my best.

Having recently celebrated the winter solstice, it may be easier to plan some downtime for yourself, if you haven’t already. During this darker season, which actually invites rest, I urge you to prioritize this special time for you to reflect and reconnect to your soul’s purpose on a deeper level.

I’ve always found a direct correlation between my extended time offline and productivity when I return. I consistently notice an increase in clarity, creativity and self-motivation. The best next steps rise to the surface when I’m ready to work again after having a break.
